Germany’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.3% in March 2026, underscoring the lasting impact of three years of economic stagnation on Europe’s largest labor market. Andrea Nahles, head of the Federal Employment Agency, pointed to the absence of the usual spring upturn, which failed to appear this year.

The number of unemployed people held steady at 2.977 million, contrary to forecasts that had anticipated an increase of 2,000. At the same time, the number of job vacancies declined to 638,000, down by 5,000 compared with a year earlier.

Since the pandemic, Germany’s economy has struggled to regain momentum, weighed down by intensifying competition from China and persistently high energy costs. The latest surge in energy prices, linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, now poses an additional risk to the country’s already fragile recovery.
