The UK construction sector showed signs of improvement in September, with the S&P Global Construction PMI rising to 46.1 from 44.3 in August 2026. Despite the uptick, the index remains below the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, indicating that activity in the sector is still shrinking, albeit at a slower pace.

The latest reading, updated on 06 October 2026, suggests that while conditions remain challenging for builders and contractors, the pace of decline is easing compared with the previous month. Investors and policymakers will be watching upcoming releases closely to see whether September’s improvement marks the start of a more sustained recovery in UK construction activity.
